Justin Bieber, Lydia, and Loving God with all your Heart, Soul, & Strength

On Tuesday, I had the wonderful opportunity of giving the devotion at Girls’ Camp Chapel. I made a complete fool of myself and shared my heart, encouraging the girls to become passionate for Jesus Christ.

I decked myself out in Justin Bieber gear…putting his picture on my hat, my backpack, and on my cell phone. I pretended to be a teenage fanatic, crazy about the teen popstar. It was a blast! The girls thought I was just a little silly. After performing my act, I asked the girls if they knew who my favorite singer was, because I just wasn’t sure they could tell…

I explained to them that when we love our God, people are able to see that love through our actions and our lives. Just as they could tell that I was in love with Bieber, others should be able to see my passion for my Savior.

In Philippians 2, Paul tells us that when we are children of God who become blameless and pure, we shine like stars in our depraved world. Our camp theme this year is SHINE, based on Matthew 5:16, which says, “let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

In Deuteronomy 6:5, the Bible says to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.” When we follow Jesus whole-heartedly people see, but if we aren’t giving Him our all, then we will look just like everyone else.

Jesus came to earth to die on the cross for our sins. He offers us eternal life and a full life on earth. We do not deserve the gift that He has freely given with love. How else should we respond other than to love with all that we have and all that we are.

An example of a woman in the Bible who loved God and shined in her community was Lydia. Her story is found in Acts 15. Lydia was a very influential business woman in her community in Philippi. It was Paul who led her to the Lord as he was witnessing in that area. Even in a time when Christians were being persecuted for their faith, Lydia fell in love with Jesus and opened her home to the community for worship. She fearlessly followed Christ and desired to serve Him no matter what the cost.

When we love our Jesus with all that we are, we will shine in our community. We will desire to be obedient in all that we do. God is looking for women and men who are willing to give everything they have to bring glory to His name. Is this the life you are striving for?
